Event/Program information |
The Puerta Abierta has a traveling library program that visits the classes at our school (preschool-6th grade) weekly to share stories and interactive activities with students and teachers. During the last week of April, our librarian will share picture books such as Letras al carbon by Irene Vasco, Manuela color canela by Elena Dreser, Lola by Junot Diaz, My Hair is a Garden by Cozbi Cabrera, We’ve Got the Whole World in our Hands by Rafael Lopez, and Thank you Omu by Oge Mora, stories that represent African Americans, and, students will have the opportunity to enjoy books with diverse representation of characters. Our librarian will use books to generate conversation about inclusion and diversity…defining the terms with children, and, providing examples and context. In addition, he will choose one grade to create a big book that will reflect the theme “Cultivando diversidad, cosechando inclusíon,” which we will display in a prominent community space such as our local park or health center. In addition, on Friday, April 30th, we will invite local puppet troupe, Titeres Raxwach to present the tale of Raam Ixiim (Heart of Corn), a traditional story of three corn sisters of different colors (red, white and blue) to a virtual audience. Yaa Xuan (Juanita) represents the corn sister with the darkest color (blue) and is excluded from her family. In addition to sharing local folklore, the story provides the audience with a powerful reflection about discrimination and human rights. |
