Event/Program information |
To share African American children’s literature and culinary literacy to build community, we will be using the recent Caldecott Honor book (2019) Thank You Omu! as the centerpiece of the program. This multicultural book by an African American author/illustrator highlights how food brings communities together. Omu is Igbo for “queen” and Omu is definitely the queen of the kitchen. All the neighbors want some of her delicious stew, but will there be enough for everyone? After sharing this story, our special guest, Culinary Literacy Chef, Shawanda Johnson, will use our mobile kitchen, recently purchased with funds from the American Dream/Dollar General Foundation Grant, to teach children how to make a classic stew like Omu’s in the book. Children participants will get real hands on experience in prepping, cooking, and eating our community stew! Each family will also get the recipe to recreate Omu’s stew at home. Our Dia program will culminate with a collage art activity, where children create paper stew in the style of Oge Mora’s award-winning collage illustrations from her book. We will also engage participations in experiencing traditional African American folk rhymes. |
