Event/Program information |
The Día de los Niños/ Día de los Libros Celebration is a culmination of months of hard work in planning, preparation and collaboration between the staff, students, librarians and administration at each of the thirty-seven elementary schools in our school district. Brownsville, Texas is located at the tip of Texas, Brownsville ISD serves over 48,000 students which are 98% Hispanic, bilingual, and come from low-economic social backgrounds. It is for this reason that we are starting early to fight the "Illiteracy," which at this point stands at 43% per household. In an effort to break this cycle we here at Brownsville ISD use Día de los Niños/ Día de los Libros to promote the diversity of the Hispanic culture of our children. We culminate the event with a book give away that for many children is their very first book ever. If you could just see the smiles that I see and every other librarian sees when we give each child from K-1st grade a book it reminds us all of why we became educators. |
