Your question is about . . .

Tricky questions, notes on unusual information sources, and general comments concerning reference problems and their solutions...

"The Exchange" was a column in the journal RQ (volumes 1–37), which is now Reference and User Services Quarterly (RUSQ, beginning with volume 38). Early irregular columns were titled “Salmagundi.” The intent of the column was to provide answers to tricky questions, notes on unusual information sources, and general comments concerning reference problems and their solutions. The last Exchange column ran in volume 38, number 4, in the summer of 1999.

An index to the Exchange columns is available online at this link. You can use this alphabetical listing to ascertain the nature of what is available in the database. Please note, however, that the Index does not represent a one-to-one correspondence to this database.

If you have an answer for one of our "unsolved mysteries," please send information to the RUSA Webmaster and it will be added to the database. We may even create a page providing credit to such stalwarts!

The Exchange online database was prepared by Charles Anderson, editor of "The Exchange" from 1984-99, and Donavan Vicha, RUSA Web Program Officer, with help from Debi Lewis and Jack Briody, ALA Information Technology & Telecommunications Services.
