Spring 2004Communications from CODESNotable Books List for 2004At Midwinter, the Notable Books Council selected its 2004 list of outstanding books for the general reader. The titles were selected for their significant contribution to the expansion of knowledge and for the pleasure they can provide to adult readers. The 2004 list has thirteen works of fiction, one book of poetry, and twelve non-fiction titles. See the Notable Books Web site for the annotated list.Outstanding Reference Sources for 2004The Reference Sources Committee has announced their 2004 list of Outstanding Reference Sources. The twenty titles represent high-quality reference works that are suitable for small to medium-sized libraries. See the Outstanding Reference Sources Web page for the list of titles. The annotated list will be published in the May issue of American Libraries.CODES ReceptionThe CODES section hosted what we hope will become an annual awards announcement reception on Sunday January 11th 2004 during the midwinter meeting in San Diego. During the reception the Notable Book Council announced the Notable Book List, The List for America's Readers, 2004, the Best Reference Sources were announced by the Outstanding Reference Committee, and both the Dartmouth Award winners and the Louis Shores Award winner were announced. The event was heavily attended by publishers, librarians, authors, and members of CODES and RUSA. The reception was made possible by NoveList/EBSCO. This reception is part of an ongoing campaign by the Notable Books Publicity Subcommittee to highlight the work of the Notable Book Council and the work of other CODES award committees.New CommitteesCODES is very pleased to welcome into our section both the Dartmouth Award Committee and the Louis Shores Award Committee. The fine work of both these committees has long been admired by the members of CODES and we are delighted that they are now officially part of CODES.Section ReviewCODES is undertaking a six month internal review to determine the best way to restructure committees to streamline some of our organization and to enhance services, programs, and opportunities for our members.Neal Wyatt, reporting
